The Right to Sight

VISION 2020 is the global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, a joint programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) with an international membership of NGOs, professional associations, eye care institutions and corporations.

VISIÓN 2020 LATINOAMÉRICA is part of this initiative and counts with the support of the the Pan American Association of Ophtalmology (PAAO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)

Cyber-Sight is an interactive website that has three distinctive program components:

E-Resources is an electronic “library” of educational material including books, manuals,

videos, case presentations, and other specially prepared website material available free and

geared to any ophthalmologist or eye healthcare provider worldwide.

E-Consultation links partners with expert mentors for patient consultation with emphasis on

offering advice while teaching partners effective methods for diagnosis and management.

E-Learning allows enrolled doctors to have access to electronic texts, including selected

material that is password protected to include those in developing countries by agreement with

the publisher, and for students to complete on-line courses covering basic ophthalmic material,

take tests, and receive a certificate of acheivement.

Conrad N. Hilton Foundation announces jury selection of innovative eye care provider that has saved millions from blindness in India, now recognized as a low-cost model for efficient healthcare globally

LOS ANGELES – March 5, 2010 – Aravind Eye Care System, the world’s largest eye care provider that has developed innovative technologies allowing it to perform 300,000 eye surgeries each year – 70% subsidized or free for the poor – has been selected to receive the 2010 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize of $1.5 million. The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation presents the annual award, the world’s largest humanitarian prize, to an organization that is doing extraordinary work to alleviate human suffering. More than 200 nominations are received from throughout the world, and an independent international jury makes the final selection.

There are 45 million blind people in the world, the majority in the developing world, and 12 million of these are in India. Because of extreme sun and genetics, Indians get cataracts in their 40s and 50s versus 60s and 70s in the United States. Without surgery they go blind, losing many of their productive years. Realizing that it was possible to end much of the unnecessary blindness in his country, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, known as Dr. V., upon his retirement in 1976 from government health service, mortgaged his home to start an eye clinic – Aravind – with 11 beds in a rented house in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Ante el incremento de la población discapacitada visual en nuestro país, debido a la acentuación de la radiación ultravioleta, diabetes, desnutrición y mal nutrición, entre otros factores, el Ministerio de Salud lanzó ayer el proyecto Visión 2020.

Para la representante de la Sociedad Panameña de Oftalmología, Maritza López, el panorama es preocupante. Unas 15,170 de personas padecen de ceguera, de esta cifra entre el 50 y 60% padece de cataratas, y la otra parte de enfermedades refractivas no corregidas, es decir que necesitan lentes y no cuentan con la fluidez económica para comprárselos, mientras que el resto padece de glaucoma y requieren de un tratamieno continuo.

El Ministerio ya está comprando equipos de oftalmología en conjunta colaboración con el Club de Leones. Cada equipo tiene un costo de 50 mil dólares y permitirán realizar unas 120 operaciones por año. El equipo se encuentra en el Policentro de Juan Díaz, Hospital San Miguel Arcángel, Nicolás Solano en Chorrera, Joaquín Pablo Franco, en Las Tablas, y el Chicho Fábrega, en Santiago.

About the Book

This book is designed to transfer useful techniques for the clinical management of diabetic patients. It is an attempt to go beyond the results of clinical trials and to address the nuances of treating diabetics by compressing the author’s clinical experience into a format that hopefully makes it easy to expand your skills. It does not start with the fundamentals; instead, it is assumed that the reader can do a basic examination and is at least partially familiar with various tests such as fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography. The book is written for residents, beginning retina fellows, and comprehensive ophthalmologists that are recently out of training-- as well as for anyone interested in broadening their understanding of these complex patients.

Dr. Jonathan Walker is a retina specialist in private practice and a clinical assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, Fort Wayne.

Helen Keller International Wins Prestigious 1.4269 Million USD Champalimaud Vision Award

The €1 million (US$1.4 million) António Champalimaud Vision Award is the largest monetary prize in the field of vision and among the largest scientific and humanitarian prizes in the world.
